Yesterday Nintendo announced the return of the Super Smash Bros Invitational, a tournament that was hosted back in 2015 to promote the release of the then-upcoming game Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. This time around they’ll be giving us the first look at the new Smash that was just announced for Nintendo Switch, with a playable demo available at E3. This is particularly exciting because if it’s anything like the last tournament, they’ll have some of the biggest competitive Smash players onboard to compete, so our first look at the game will be at how it can be played professionally at a competitive level. There still aren’t really any details about the game other than the fact that Sakurai is involved and it appears to be developed by Hal Laboratories rather than Namco Bandai/Sora like Smash 4 was.

In addition, Nintendo has also announced the Splatoon 2 World Championship for the same week with a logo that harkens back to the Nintendo World Championships from the last couple years and 1990. Details are sparse on both events for the time being, as we only really know what we’ve seen in the promo video embedded above. According to Nintendo’s E3 site, there will be an online qualifier tournament next month to decide who will be competing in the Splatoon 2 championship. We likely won’t know who will be competing in either tournament until sometime in May, so look forward to those announcements.

There aren’t really many details of anything else on the E3 site for the time being, but we’ll probably see a little more soon, possibly a concrete date and time for the Nintendo Direct (hopefully not right before the showfloor opens like they did last year).
