In the most unexpected move possible, Nintendo has (as expected) announced the SNES Classic, but have decided to include the previously unreleased Star Fox 2 with it. The full lineup of games is as follows:

Contra III: The Alien Wars
Donkey Kong Country
EarthBound
Final Fantasy III
F-ZERO
Kirby Super Star
Kirby’s Dream Course
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Mega Man X
Secret of Mana
Star Fox
Star Fox 2
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
Super Castlevania IV
Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Super Punch-Out!!
Yoshi’s Island

The fact that this $80 plug and play box includes amazing (and expensive) games like EarthBound, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy III, and Secret of Mana already makes it well worth it, but Star Fox 2 makes this a must buy for Nintendo fans. Many of you may be aware already that Star Fox 2 was cancelled after already being mostly finished and leaked online years ago, allowing anyone who knows where to find ROMs to play it on an emulator or just buy an unofficial repro cart. This is the first time the game has been made officially available since it was cancelled years ago.

Anybody who has paid attention to the NES Classic though, will know that it wasn’t exactly easy to find due to several circumstances before it was ultimately discontinued. Nintendo has noted this and said that they plan to produce significantly more units than they did for the NES Classic, but they don’t currently have any plans to produce them after the end of this year.

If you’re in the UK, pre-orders have already gone up on Amazon and GAME, but if you’re in North America, nothing has gone up about Pre-orders yet. Some people are reporting that EB Games, and by extension Gamestop, aren’t going to be doing pre-orders to lower chances of scalpers getting them first, and it’s very possible that other retailers will be doing the same.

You can find out more about the SNES Classic at their beautifully designed site, inspired by the aesthetic they used for the SNES promotional material in the 90s. It is set to launch on September 29th.
