Now that Sora Ltd. and Namco Bandai have officially started development on the next Super Smash Bros., a poll to find out what characters gamers would most like to see in the next two installments of the franchise is probably on its way. After all, this was the case for both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl early in their development. The problem, however, is that these polls have only ever been available to Japanese Smash fans. We are going to change that.
While we’ve hosted “Smash Polls” in the past, we actually have an opportunity to do something with our answers. So, we’re starting fresh! Over the course of the next two months, we will be polling you, our loyal readers, to find out what characters you’d like to see as playable fighters in the 3DS and Wii U version of the next Smash Bros. The final result will be presented straight to the director of the upcoming games himself: Masahiro Sakurai.
For our first poll, we’ve taken 32 of some of the most requested first-party characters, one per franchise, and have thrown them against each other. You can vote for 16 characters on the poll so make your votes count! Also, if you don’t see your favorite character listed in our poll, don’t worry! We’re taking write-in votes in the comments! However, keep in mind that these quarterfinals are the only time we are accepting write-ins. After the quarterfinals are through, write-ins will no longer be accepted so vote early and vote often! The top 12 characters in this poll (along with the top 4 most requested write-in characters) will go on to compete against each other in our semifinals later this month.
And, as a last note for write-in characters, we are sticking to the two rules that Sakurai has set for his previous polls: The character must have originated from a video game and appeared on a Nintendo console. Capcom doesn’t hate the franchise. Megaman was utter garbage in Marvel 2 (even Roll was better than him), and neither X nor Volnutt (Legends) from Tatsunoko, (TvC and MvC3 had the same developer) really fit in to the ridiculously fast paced action. Plus there was the issue with Inafune, which is the reason Legends 3 got cancelled. My guess was Capcom planning on creating another Megaman series (like they ussually do when Megaman dissappears for awhile). But because fans flipped shit, PS3 fans got the crappy NA box art Megaman as a joke character for SFxT (thank the lord i got the 360 version). And I honestly believe fan response had nothing to do with X’s project X zone appearance, X is a perfect fit for a game like that.

Fiora would make a great alternate to Shulk with her dual-sword abilities, and her Final would be easy to establish, IMO. Melia would be a welcome addition to the mage content of the SSB roster(seeing as Zelda is the only mage so far).
As for assists, Riki would be a great addition to the Assists with his support abilities, Tyranitar could stomp around and make a sandstorm while he’s around, and Reshiram/Zekrom would probably be the newest Poke Ball Legendaries. Soren or Ewan could provide offensive support.

FINALLY! I second Simon Belmont! Castlevania is a CLASSIC Nintendo series and it needs some recognition. Any character from Castlevania would be good, but Simon is the obvious favourite. Aside maybe from Maria Renard…the only problem I could see with Simon would be that, true to the original Castlevania, whenever he gets hit by an object or enemy, he would fly back 10 feet, making him a punching bag in smash bros. Still, getting rid of that would make Simon a kickass character. It’d be fun to make a stage for him, too, and there are so many fantastic Castlevania song remixes out there, I’d buy the game just to hear those soundtracks.

I could actually those three as playable Pokemon. Garchomp would be a glass cannon. He would be quick and powerful. I could see him with Fire Blast, Dragon Rush, Dragon Claw (in a Shoryuken style form), and Earthquake as his special move-set (with Dragon Claw as a side smash move). Outrage would be his Final Smash. However, he would be frail (as his defensive stats in the game are not the best).
Tyranitar would be like Bowser in weight and power, but would have better projectiles. I could see it incorporating certain moves like Earthquake, Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Rock Slide, Stone Edge, and the like. Haxorus would be like Garchomp, albeit not as quick. However, it would be sturdier.
Namco Characters:
Siegfried/Nightmare (Soul Calibur/Edge series [preferably SCII armor for Nightmare]).
Note: Separate costumes for this character as well. Not a Zelda/Shiek character type, but like Wario for different costumes. I remember in SCII that the 3rd costume for Nightmare was Siegfried uncorrupted (though he still acted like Nightmare).
Lloyd Irving (Tales of Symphonia). He fits.
A lead character of the Castlevania Series (Castlevania).
I will not say Goku, as he would be a bit too overpowered (though Super Smash Flash 2 has balanced him enough to not make him too overpowered). I would not be surprised if they did put him in, as Namco Bandai have created DBZ games. Plus, weren’t there DBZ games on the Gamecube?

I actually have a suggestion for you guys in charge of this: A lot fewer people are going to write-in extra votes instead of just taking the poll at the top. I think you should take the top 5 or so write-ins and make a separate poll for them that you release.
The polls themselves are what gets so much more attention, and I’ve seen enough write-in votes for a few characters that tell me that you’ve left some big names out of your poll. But as write-ins, even the popular ones get what, 10 votes? That doesn’t even compare to the number of votes that even the losers in the main poll are getting. That’s where the exposure comes from, and I think you should give a fair chance to the guys you forgot about.
I agree with this. I was kinda disappointed when I saw Lyndis (Fire Emblem) wasn’t in the poll. Giving her a chance as a writ-in would be nice, as well as all the other write-ins people have been writing-in.
For real. Most people in the West wouldn’t vote for Krom because they don’t know who he is. Lyn is much more well known and probably would’ve had more votes on this survey than Krom has. I don’t know how it was decided who would represent what series or why only one rep would be on the survey.

He would have constant power of flight (in gameplay terms, it wouldn’t be actual flight because that would be OP, but it makes him lighter, faster, floatier, gives him more mid-air jumps, improves his glide speed, and he floats over the ground in a different stance than Pit to justify his different moveset) and, if needed, could use Dark Pit Staff instead of Silver Bow to be further decloned.
He would use the kick from the Underworld Gatekeeper fight as his down-B (think Falcon Kick but less fancy) since he doesn’t have a Mirror Shield equivalent. The other specials don’t really need changed all that much, except possibly side-B.

He’s a classic among Melee fans. He differs from Marth, and Ike is no replacement. Roy must return.

Being around as long as Captain Falcon, Samurai Goroh is almost as Iconic as he is. He’s been on all the F-Zero covers and all the games. Falcon needs a rival in SSB. Plus he’s got a katana!

The first Final Fantasy was such an important contribution to Nintendo and gaming history, and it needs to be recognized! Have fighter in.

He should have been in the game a long time ago, and I think he’s way past due. Sheik and Zero Suit Samus showed us that wipping people is fun and has potential. I think Simon, one of the classics of the NES era, can perfect it and show us how it’s done! Think along the lines of Zero Suit Samus, but as strong as Ike!

If Samurai Goroh is the Wario to Falcon’s Mario, then Black Shadow would be his Bowser. More of a personal favorite, but I think he would be more fitting and well deserved than many other choices. Plus he looks friggin’ awesome.

It actually blows my mind how Mega Man is NOT in the list. If any third party property deserves to be in a Smash Bros game, its the original, classic Mega Man. He should have been in Brawl without a doubt. I love Metal Gear Solid to death as it’s one of my favorite…THINGS ever, and not to hate on Snake, but Mega should have been in even over him had there been a choice. Hell, Mega Man contributed a lot to the success and legendary Nintendo consoles and more. If Mega Man were in, fans could finally have the Blue Bomber vs the Blue Blur and well as a legendary confrontation between Samus. Throughout the games SO many items and assist characters could be implemented for a truly solid move set in a Smash Bros game. The potential is there and it is vast in quantity.
I am, by far, not the only one who thinks this train of thought because it’s a no-brainer, obvious choice for a special character. Ergo, my vote goes to Mega Man.

I can’t see Palutena ever becoming a main fighter, honestly. Granted, I don’t know too much about Kid Icarus, but she’s a goddess. She wouldn’t get involved in a fight voluntarily any more than to assist Pit, unless it was a serious threat. Then, Tom Nook seems better suited as an assist trophy than a fighter. Then Ridley seems better as a boss than a character. He’s much too large and, unlike Ganondorf and Bowser, is much more of a wild animal.
Karate Joe… though I love Rhythm Heaven (it’s my second favorite DS game, next to The World Ends with You), he seems like he’d be a really bland fighter. He’s just a martial artist with love troubles who kicks barrels and light bulbs and bombs. Mr. Game and Watch had more to base a moveset off of than that.
That’s just my two cents, though.
(One last thing- are 3rd-Party characters allowed? If so, I think Neku Sakuraba, from The World Ends with You for DS, would make a pretty great brawler. He’s got plenty to base his moves off of, and the pins may work well as items.)

Key is absolutely correct. There is a chance that newcomer might have atleast two character from the same franchise. To prove it: Melee had for mario rep: Dr. Mario, Peach and Bowser, zelda had three/four reps as well. Even brawll added lucario and pokemon trainer for pokemon reps and metaknight and king dedede (these two were highly requestion since ssb) for kiby reps. Though some could be surprise, but sakurai chooses what he think is interesting on the request. Like for melee he chose boswer and peach who had high votes. (Source smashboardS)
Smash 4, might be chance of two rep some the same series. Even japan most request, heck even most fan around the wrold most requested characters are dixe kong and king k rool have chance. Dixie was going to playable in brawl, so she might come in smash 4 with k rool. So please, do another better poll, this one is good for one rep. But it if was like how prevoius official poll conduct by sakurai, this might be able to get attention. Again this is backed up by smashboards.

Would be a great character to play with, have Yomiel with Missile and Sissel following him, think Pikmin. Different specials utilize the different Ghost Tricks to fling items, protect himself, teleport, etc.. Final could be the murder machine or Yomiel’s body control.
