I have to start by saying that Mystique is a bit of a different style of game for me to be playing, let alone reviewing. This is simply because I do not have the patience for a point and click game and I get scared easy. So to play a game which is a horror point and click puzzle game is relatively new for me. However was Mystique worth it?

Story

There isn’t exactly a great deal of story involved in chapter 1 of the game. You begin after regaining consciousness in a dark abandoned bathroom. You don’t know where you are, who you are or why there is blood everywhere and I don’t expect many answers soon. However there are enough scary little moments in that one room to keep you intrigued until the chapters end.

Graphics

In a way the graphics are the game are generic 3d models that nowadays don not look all too great. But we have to take into account that this is a mobile phone game and that only a few years ago we only had snake to play not anything in 3d. In that respect the game looks very nice for a mobile phone game. It doesn’t rival some of the iPhones best but it is more than enough to suit its purpose.

Sound

There isn’t really a great deal of sound in the game. There is some spooky music playing without lyrics to set up the atmosphere. There is also some occasional sounds from items being used, like the Circular saw which sounds like it’s actually a saw.

Gameplay

Mystiques gameplay is its strongest point. The puzzle dares you to figure your way out of a locked, dark, decrepit room by discovering clues and tools along the way to help free yourself. Amidst your quest to gain freedom, there are some suspense moments as poltergeists appear and vanish in the same instance. It might take you anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour to complete the game, depending on how good you are with puzzles but the though involved with it such as the way you obtain the key from the bath is very good. The controls for the game are ok; you use the trackball to move and the touch screen to click on things and turn. The issue is sometimes you have to click multiple times to actually select things. It would be nice to adjust the sensitivity or something.

Verdict

Is this game worth your hard-earned cash? Well considering it’s now free I would tell you to jump at the chance and try the game out whether you are a fan of the genre or not. It’s a fun game and despite how short it is it offers a bit of a challenge and looks and sounds ok.

VGTribune gives Mystique Chapter 1: Foetus a 8.5/10.
