Nintendo World Championships Returns for 2017

You heard that right! The Nintendo World Championships, debuting back in 1990, are returning this year (although it isn’t technically ‘World,’ as it’s still just America). You can view the trailer here:

Qualifiers start from August 19th at various Best Buy stores, and will involve two groups of different age ranges. Both will be playing the 3DS classic Mario Kart 7, time trialing different courses based on the group players are in. The first is for those that are 12 and under; they will be playing on DS Luigi’s Mansion as Luigi, with the Standard Kart, Standard Wheels and Super Glider. Those 13 and over will be in the second group, racing as Bowser in GBA Bowser Castle 1 with the same kart set-up as the younger group.

Participation is based on a first-come, first-served basis, and those with the fastest times from both groups will advance to the live event. You can find your nearest qualifier below:

No word yet on the format of this event, if there will be special guests like with 2015’s competition, or what’s in store for the winner apart from the fame and glory. However, it is sure to be just as exciting as ever, especially with the recently released Nintendo Switch sure to be a part of the festivities. Let us know if you plan on competing, and what games you would like to see in the finals.
