Meet Nintendo’s New President

When Satoru Iwata sadly passsed away this past summer, I think I can say for all of us that we were both terribly shocked and heartbroken. However, one question that has remained on everybody’s minds is who will take over as CEO of the big N. Well, two months after Iwata-san’s passing, we finally have our answer: Tatsumi Kimishima.

Kimishima started his career at Sanwa Bank of Japan, where he worked for 27 years. He dealt with corporate planning, international business development, corporate communications and promotions.

But what history does he have with Nintendo? His first venture into the gaming world career-wise was as the Chief Financial Officer of the Pokémon Company in 2000. A year later, he was appointed president of Pokémon USA Inc. During his time here, the second generation of games were being released, being Pokémon Gold and Silver, as well as Pokémon Crystal.

In 2002, the current president at the time, Hiroshi Yamauchi, was stepping down, and his son-in-law, Minoru Arakawa, took the position of president of NoA. However, this position was only held for just a year, so Tatsumi Kimishima took over. This came at an important time since in terms of success in the home console department, Nintendo’s GameCube couldn’t keep up with the success of Microsoft’s XBox and Sony’s Playstation 2. Under his leadership, their latest console, the Wii, had massive success in Western areas. After this, he was promoted to Managing Director of Nintendo, which leads to the present day, where he has succeeded Mr. Iwata and is now the current President of Nintendo.

Sure, he may not seem as experienced in games as Shigeru Miyamoto or Genyo Takeda, but he’s experienced in what is essential; finance. There’s no doubt that his keen skills in this field will help Nintendo in some way, and whilst it may be sad to see the risky attitude Iwata had go away, Kimishima can hopefully make big money for Nintendo once again. Speaking of Mr. Miyamoto and Mr. Takeda, they have now been dubbed as ‘Creative Fellow’ and ‘Technology Fellow’ respectively. This title has been granted to them for their advanced knowledge and extensive experience, and they hold the role of providing advice and guidance in their areas.

So, the new president may not be who fans were expecting, or possibly hoping for, and he may have not touched our hearts in the same way as the former CEO. But hey, he may just be as passionate for games as any Nintendo executive, and hopefully this may signal the return of a Nintendo Direct. So I hope you will join me in welcoming our new president, Tatsumi Kimishima!
