Mario, two Zelda's, Pikmin, and Kid Icarus all confirmed (sort of) for Nintendo

Shigeru Miyamoto

This year Nintendo's E3 conference was for the casual gamer.  Sure we got Animal Crossing, but the rest of the conference was all full of casual games.  Yes I consider GTA a casual game, but a different kind of casual game.  Really though, the people who put together E3 are buisness men, suits, the only person who really is part of game devolopment there is Miyamoto. Throughout the past few days we've heard these comments from Reggie Fils-Aimes.  "The Mario and Zelda teams are hard at work" and "We never said we would have Kid Icarus at E3."  Miyamoto when asked about the Mario/Zelda comment replied that the Zelda DS team is active as well as the Wii one.  He later confirmed yesterday Pikmin 3.  We pretty much got 5 new titles announced.  The secret surprises of E3.  New Mario, two new Zeldas, new Kid Icarus, and Pikmin 3 were practically confirmed.  VGTribune will fill you in on more info as it comes, or leaks, out.

To sum up what I was saying, Nintendo is a business which obviously needs to make money for itself and do what is in the interest of it's shareholders. Casual games are where the money is in the market right now. Therefore, that's most likely why we saw the focus on casual games and not the "core games" that "core ggamers" want so much. Although Nintendo's focus for this E3 was the casual ggamer, we still accidentally got these announcements so be happy :D)

Another take:

To address the Nintendo E3 showing:

Some say that the core gamers were addressed via Rayman Raving Rabbids: TV Party, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Call of Duty: World at War and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. Although this may be true in some cases, Nintendo fans are usually Nintendo fans due to great "core" first party games. The only first party, arguably, non casual game for Wii coming out in the foreseeable future is Animal Crossing. And with the quality of many third party Wii games not being of the highest caliber, we're only "Living On a Prayer" that these third party games will satiate the core gamers appetite. Although the Nintendo showing at E3 this year wasn't all that great for the core gamer, many "core" games were practically confirmed by Miyamoto and the Wii MotionPlus attachment has opened new doors for more intriguing first and third party games.

Well, they weren't official announcements, but they were practically confirmed.

Via Infendo:

-Zelda Wii: Says that the title doesn’t exist, but the Zelda team which always works on the series is “hard at work”.

-Kid Icarus Wii: Again he pushes that Kid Icarus is not a game, nor is one being developed, but mentions that a Kid Icarus team exists.

-Pikmin 3: Shiggy says the game has not been announced, but why bring the subject up in the first place? Update: Miyamoto confirms Pikmin 3 minutes after this post.

-Punch-out!! Wii: When explaining the possibilities of the MotionPlus he uses Punch-Out as an example…”many possibilities such as a very accurate version of Punch-out that goes beyond what Wii sports boxing can do…”

-Mario DS: Reminds us that there are two AAA Mario teams. The Galaxy team in Tokyo, and the DS team at Kyoto HQ. Adds that the Mario DS team is also working hard. It might not mean anything, but again why bring it up?

Why would you have a team it if there will not be/is not a game?

Aside from an official confirmation, what else could you hear from the man whom oversees these games being developed to confirm they exist? This is pretty much a confirmation. Anyway, who had any doubt that they would make any of these games? We will just have to wait longer for an OFFICIAL confirmation.

To sum up: Although we don't have the abundancy of "core games" this year as we have had in years past, don't fret because more "core" 1st party games will arrive in a timely fashion in the very near future. Plus, there are some great games coming out...it's not that bad.

A Kater Opinion Piece: Freeness to buy Games

ESRB Ratings

This is the start of a weekly opinion piece set composed by me, Kater.

Today's topic is how easy it is to buy Teen/Mature reated games while being under the age of 18.

I am currently 16 years old and recently I bought The Orange Box for the PC.  The game is rated Teen to Mature due to the fact that Half-Life 2, HL2: Episode 1, HL2: Episode 2, and Team Fortress 2 are all M, while Portal is T.  Now, the problem is you can have probably anyone, of any age, go up and buy a Mature rated game.  Not only do I believe this is increasing the level of anger in younger children, but it is also raising many complaints by parents.  Namely parents who want stores to decide what their kid buys, taking the responsibility away from them.

The real issue is the parents. If they are so concerned they should be the ones who monitor what their kids are playing. Why should it be the stores responsibility to take care of their kids?  Don't get me wrong, it's not right for the stores to be selling these games to underages kids, but it is just as much the fault of the parents for not paying attention.

In conclusion, I believe three steps can be taken:

1. Destroy all video games (Just kidding.)

2. Have the parents pay more attention (fat chance)

3. Enforce the ages for the ESRB (Electronic Software Ratings Board).  They are there for a reason.
