Club Nintendo Scheduled To Be Discontinued

This morning the news broke on Nintendo’s own Club Nintendo page about information on the Club Nintendo Program’s discontinuation.  This discontinuation is to make room for a new loyalty program that hasn’t been announced yet, so don’t get too upset, yet.

Here are the details as we know them.  Click on the dates below:

Nintendo will increase the number of “free games” that can be bought with coins in February to give members more options to spend their coins before the end of June.

As for the Elite Status this year, like last year, it will be a free game from a list of games available to be announced on April 1, 2015 and must be claimed by April 30, 2015.  The link from last year will be updated to show what games will be available this year.

Other information from their FAQ:

While part of me is a little upset at this announcement, I’m not all that surprised.  The loyalty program wasn’t as good as it was in its infancy.  Just looking at the Platinum rewards we’ve gotten over the years you can see how either quality or at imagination has degraded over time.

So I’m hoping the new loyalty program will reinvigorate some of that creativity Nintendo is known for.  I also expect that it will use the Nintendo Network IDs as a login to use a platform that already exists for both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS’s respective eShops and MiiVerse integrations so we won’t have to memorize yet another login and password.

What are your thoughts?  Let us know in the comments below.

And let us know what you think of the “accordion” buttons in the article.  I was using them for the first time and would like to know if people like it or not.  Thanks for your input in advance.
