Retronauts everywhere: let’s face it – we LOVE our retro games. We gravitate towards nostalgia and sentiment rather than graphics and online social community when describing our favorite game of all time. Before every paycheck, our minds tend to ask questions like: ‘which old-school Sega Genesis game am I going to buy for my collection?’, instead of ones like: ‘which latest PS4 title am I going to pick up?’. We’d rather play our favorite classic games on the actual console it was designed for, rather than services like the Virtual Console or Xbox Live. Dating all the way back to the 1972 Magnavox Odyssey (the first home gaming console), there has always been something about retro games that has caught our attention amidst the influx of current generation titles. But rather than waiting to order your treasured retro games from online (and often overpriced) stores like eBay and Amazon, why not act on the benefit of going to your local retro game store to purchase it?

Believe it or not, retro game stores are becoming a huge hit among major metropolitan areas across the United States. Unfortunately, many retro gamers don’t take advantage of buying from these local businesses (usually due to unawareness of such stores in their area). Have no fear, though – VG Tribune has you covered! Introducing our newest article series, Blast From the Past: A Guide to Local Retro Video Game Stores. In every article, we will aggregate all of the local retro game stores within a major metropolitan area and post for your reading pleasure. So if you are itching to pick up a copy of Mario Kart 64 for a local get-together, why wait to buy it online when you can get it right down the street from your house?

In our first edition of Blast From the Past: A Guide to Local Retro Video Game Stores, we visit the city of Austin, TX. Often mentioned in top 10 lists for small business growth and video game development hubs, locally owned retro video game stores are thriving more than ever in Austin. The city is home to the headquarters of renowned retro stores like Game Over Videogames (now expanding into other major metropolitan areas like Seattle and Dallas) and Apollo Games (known for their impeccable customer service). Whether you are a North Austin suburbanite, a Central Austin student attending the University of Texas, or an aspiring indie game developer living in South Austin, you’ll have plentiful opportunities to visit one of the fifteen retro video game stores in the area.

Are we missing a retro game store from Austin on this list? Do you have a story you’d like to share about visiting one of these stores? Feel free to let us know in the comments section!
